Q. Can anyone point me to a reference as to when the 2nd Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia/National Guard was retired?
A. Not retired, only redesignated. The regiment served as the 104th Infantry during WW I and in 1921 was officially redesignated as the 104th Infantry. Its history goes back to 1662 and the 104th is still part of the Massachusetts National Guard.
To my knowlege, they are the only US regiment to win the French Croix de Guerre in both WW I and WW II for action in the same locale, Lorraine..
