The 15th Infantry Regiment served in China from 1912 to 1938. Their mission was to protect American lives and property in that country. At the outbreak of WW I, all the European troops were withdrawn and the 15th assumed their patrols. This was the age of the war lords and the 15th was very busy. At one time, the State Department assumed control of their mission. Among the officers of the “China Regiment were Joseph W. (Vinegar Joe) Stillwell and George C. Marshall.
